got memory?

04.13.08 by jewels

Yeah I got some, but never enough it seems. My 1gb was awesome when I bought this lappy, but now often not enough, especially with my fav web browser hogging so much of it. So I went on the memory hunt looking to buy some additional fuel. Everyone says “memory is so cheap these days!” Well maybe for everyone else it is, but in my little Murphy’s Law world things aren’t lookin quite so cheery! I have two lappys I want to upgrade. An older model with only 512, and this one. Well it wouldn’t bother me if I could take the memory from this one and put it in the other-but NO that can’t work out for me! I’ve got to fork out several hundred bucks to upgrade both separately. That’s just not looking to friendly to me, so I start hunting for alternatives. Yes Virginia, there is a Rama Claus!

Enter ebooster, a handy little software gadget that got me more pseudo memory dirt cheap! This little gem allows you to use usb sticks, secondary hard drives, and flash memory to boost your memory. It can run 4 devices, each up to 4gb. Nice way to get around the max 2gb memory in winXP. The trial version allows you to run it for 4 hours with each restart. So basically you could probably go forever on that trial by just running it during the times you need the extra boost. I saw a nice increase in the performance of Firefox, so I went for the full version. Luckily I happened to have a spare 1gb SD card lying around, so I tossed it into my slot and off I went. The program recognized it immediately, and asked if this was what I wanted to use. From there you just click the build cache button and it begins building your virtual memory cache onto that drive.

I haven’t done any speed tests, and I don’t need to. I see a huge difference in the way my pc is running. Previously, I would have to restart Firefox several times a day, as with all my addons it eventually slows my system to a crawl. Since I installed this gem, Firefox has been running for days without needing a restart. That’s good enough for me! There have been no system slowdowns. I’ve run heavy programs while FF is open and have had no freezes or performance degradation.

There are a few caveats:
It’s XP only.
Must have usb 2.0.
Doesn’t auto start at system start.
And it ain’t free.

But hey, you all know where to find stuff right?
