ewwww....system restore.  Arguably the worst program ever created.  Safemode and diagnostic software...or, if you have the original windows xp disk, run a repair on it, too.  Amazing how many ways to fix a windows problem these days (which should explain how crappy the system is...shame nothing for school is compatible with a Mac, as windows PCs don't read Mac discs).

If it boots in safe mode but not normal mode.

An installation that will only boot into its safe mode typically has a major problem, such as disk corruption or the installation of poorly configured software that prevents the operating system from successfully booting into its normal operating mode.

Since it boots in safe mode that might eliminate driver issues since it won't load any unnecessary drivers or software.

Sometimes Event viewer will give a clue.

Got to start>run>eventvwr

Now in the left pane with application.security and system.

Left click application and see what it states in the right pane....e.g.it might say ERROR...right click on it>then properties....does it give a clue?

Do the same for security and system also.

hi,
two things keep making my connection to the internet fail. (all the windows close and i get a "send error report" box)
1. trying to open an adobe/acrobat file
2. trying to connect to internet explorer. I prefer ff, but sometimes i use xp

My computer will no longer perform either task.
any suggestions?

could this be bc of add-on settings i inadvertently put into place before installing adobe and ie - thereby preventing the proper installation of one or the other?

thanks for helping me

sounds like a corrupted file/registry key.  Did you try a fresh install of both?  IE is tricky, as it comes installed directly with windows; maybe grab Hiren's boot disc and run some of the diagnostic software (reset winsock, mini xp are great diagnostic tools).  First, though, uninstall Adobe then reinstall it and it should fix that problem.  Also, never a need to use IE...

Also, never a need to use IE...
While I agree with this statement theoretically, there are some practical implications. For instance, one of my online courses only supports IE. So there are times (granted they're limited) when having access to IE is necessary. But there are options........

You can use IE within FF with any of these extensions:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/10909
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1429

Or if you really prefer having a dedicated IE browser than I recommend maxthon-which is like IE on steriods. It's what I use for my IE only class.

thanks so much to both of you.

I 'd already uninstalled  - and then reinstalled - adobe and had the same problem still. but i can try again. maybe i didnt completely uninstall the first version. The process seemed simple, but was also new to me.
i havent tried the links you gave me, but appreciate them very much, in case i take an online course.
Also, if this helps, i get a system error code when i try to launch ie that looks like this
EventType : InPageError P1 : c000009c       P2 : 00000003

and when i click on data report, it lists 2 files in my temporary folder that will be sent with the data. I would remove them, but dont want to lose something important. Do you want the names of them?

1. i uninstalled adobe and will soon reinstall it
2.I didnt uninstall ie 7 bc i got a warning message before  i did. It said that "the following programs[and then it listed a bunch of things i use like my virus protection program, microsoft office, outlook, MOZILLA, media player, windows xp updates] were installed AFTER ie 7 and that i might lose them if i  uninstalled it. Will I lose them?
4. I tried to install ie 8 without uninstalling ie 7, but the furthest i could get was downloading it.
got another error message whilst opening it.
3. i installed maxthon successfully.  i was unable to do anything but stare at a blank homepage because another error message came up.
it says "Maxthon browser has encountered a problem and needs to close."  It's one of those "mocrosoft barnad error messages.

emailme , can you open IE without addons ?  I didnt now about this option till I found it the other day , but if you go to start , all  programs , accessories , system tools , there is a shortcut to open IE with no add ons . If it opens that way it may help you to figure out the problem .

@emailmemore-

I may have missed this in an earlier post but.. have you actually "reset' IE back to factory settings?  there may be something if use here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378

If that doesn't help, here are some other options to try..

If you don't already have this program installed, you should  its a great tool to clean up your PC (FREE)

http://www.ccleaner.com/

After running CCLeaner, proceed with the following to test IE in "no add-on" mode to discover whether this behavior persist if you start IE7 in No Add-ons mode.

To start IE7 in No Add-ons mode:

Right-click on the blue IE desktop icon and select Start without Add-ons; or

Start > (All) Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No
add-ons).

Let us know how it goes!  Wink

These links may help though it is very involved....try safe mode first and you might luck out with using system restore.
