well, i bet you are one of the people who hear always "microsoft and security?!? -> lol" but
that is in my opinion not true, microsoft delivers free and useful tools to protect and secure
the windows operating system against malicious software.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/tools/default.mspx

i am using only linux, but that means not that iam hating windows, and i do not think that linux
is much more secure then windows, the security level is the same, would i say.
it is on every operating system ( it doesnt matter which one, hp-ux, freebsd, macosx, amiga os, .... )
only a question of the right configuration.
i have also to set up my ip tables ( the kernel firewall of linux ) to filter my tcp/ip traffic, or install snort
and add the necessary rules to let it alert when someone is attacking me or even drop the attack
, same on windows, you have the integrated windows firewall with its settings for configuring tcp/ip filters
( IPSec is also available ).

here is a good example for a security application from ms :

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/tools/mbsahome.mspx

it's often difficult to know for sure whether you've succeeded in securing your computer.
Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) checks the very latest list of fixes and compares it with the
ones that have been installed on one or more computers.

so be aware, securityholes are everywhere and in every operating system.

If I ever get my wireless working so that I can use ubuntu regularly, I hope you'll help me figure out how to secure that system! You have so much great knowledge, and are such a huge asset to us here at she-geeks. Thanks for hopping on board Fraggle.

so i would then try it from an ubuntu live cd, before you completly change the os ( or by installing it on a vmware ), maybe it works also with the
"wubi installer" ( http://wubi-installer.org/ ). so you can test at first the compatibility of your wireless network adapter. i had very good experiences with debian ( the base of ubuntu is debian ) and the hardware support ( external cd-rom drive, usb sticks, sony digicam, all works without installing any driver, just one or two packages ).
i think you will have to use this : http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/joomla/
installing over apt-get should also work, apt-cache search ndiswrapper and then apt-get install <packagename>.

Thanks fraggle. I did install with wubi, and also have been trying to get ndiswrapper to work. But it's showing me no LUV!!! At least not yet anyway!

Once I give up on the built in wireless, I'll try to get a pcmia working. Of course no linux drivers for it- so that will be a challenge too!

This is the main reason I've never dual-booted before now. But I figured I had better figure out how to tackle it if I'm ever going to learn anything. I was going to give andlinux a try, but with all the great hardy reviews I thought I'd have better luck than I had in the past.
