Firefox Times 2 – or 3, or More!
Sometimes you want to do some stuff on firefox that requires a set of addons you don’t usually run on your everyday version of our favorite browser. At these times it can be a pain to go enable everything you need for a specific task. But you don’t have to go through this time wasting activity, as you can create multiple Firefox profiles and have each one set up with the addons you want to use for that particular profile.
To begin, you must close down Firefox, so go load these instructions in an alternate browser.
(These instructions are for a pc running Windows XP)
Open the run dialog and type: firefox.exe –ProfileManager
You will be greeted with the Profile Manager which should look like this:
1) Be sure to uncheck the “Don’t ask at startup” box
2) Then click “Create Profile” to start the Create Profile Wizard
3) Click the “Next” button that pops up
Create a name for your new profile, I’m calling this one “Myspace,” and click finish.
You will be presented with the Profile Manager again, which you can close by clicking “exit.”
You want to be able to run your new profile without having to go into profile manager to use it. So, next up is making a shortcut to your new profile. We will also throw in a command that will enable you to open your new profile in a separate instance of Firefox, while still running your original version.
Go to your desktop and right click on your Firefox shortcut, then choose “new shortcut” from the menu. You will now have a 2nd shortcut for Firefox, right click it and select “properties” from the menu. In the “target” box, add in the commands as shown, substituting your profile name where this one says “Myspace” and then click “apply,” then “ok.”
Next, change the name of your shortcut to reflect the profile it points to. Right click and select “rename” from the menu. Open it up, and you now have a clean version of Firefox to customize to your liking for whatever task you choose. And the best part, you can run them both at the same time!
